Production Supervisor

Job Summary

The Production Supervisor will be responsible for leading, planning, organizing and directing all daily activities in the production area.  This position is a working supervisor who will be working side by side with their crew at times. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans and directs production operations.
  2. Reviews production orders, schedules and ship dates to ensure all product is flowing, as it should throughout the departments, and ready to ship as needed for client.
  3. Plans production operations, establishing priorities and sequences for manufacturing products.
  4. Ensures product is being manufactured according to client specifications.
  5. Plans staffing needs within approved staffing levels in collaboration with the Human Resources Manager.
  6. Prepares operational schedules and coordinates manufacturing activities to ensure production and quality of products meets specifications.
  7. Reviews production and operating reports and resolves operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
  8. Develops or revises standard operational and working practices and observes workers to ensure compliance with standards.
  9. Focuses on driving safety, quality and productivity.
  10. Provides leadership, management, and motivation to attain high levels of employee achievement and retention.
  11. Trains new and/or existing employees as needed.
  12. Sets employees up for success. Appraises performance regularly so that employees are encouraged and lifted up through positive communication, and also understand what areas need improvement or additional training to ensure their skill level is where it needs to be. 
  13. Resolves employee issues and/or raises them to the Human Resources Manager for action.
  14. Coordinates and monitors workflow between departments.
  15. Compiles stores and retrieves production data.

  1. Must be able to understand the production work that is performed throughout the shop.  
  2. Must be able to coordinate departments and schedules so that product is completed on time according to client needs.
  3. Analytical and problem solving skills: Ability to calculate numbers and problem solve thru complex issues.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  4. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare and develop reports and correspondence.
  5. Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  6. Communication proficiency: Ability to read, write, speak and understand English fluently.  Must have a professional and courteous manner when dealing with others.
  7. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  8. Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  9. Organizes and prioritizes large volumes of information.
  10. Personal effectiveness / credibility.
  11. Must be organized, thorough, have a high level of accuracy, and pay attention to details.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High School Diploma or GED, and 2 – 4 years of related supervisory experience and training in a manufacturing environment.
  2. Strong verbal and written communication skills, plus analytical, organizational, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  3. Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Must be able to learn and effectively utilize Scheduler, Sage and/or any other software as needed.
  4. Excellent time management and follow up skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task and prioritize work.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Business.
  2. Three to five years of related experience in supervision in a safety-focused, production/manufacturing environment.
  3. Experience in a fast-paced environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises production employees within the Production Department.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; effective planning, scheduling, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

This position is typically Monday through Friday, first shift.  It rarely requires evening or weekend work, but it is possible on occasion, if something urgent comes up.
